Summer Movie Preview 2012 (part 1)

Summer Movie Preview 2012 - Part One
Every summer there’s a battle that happens across the country for our hard earned cash. This battle takes place in movie theaters in every city and state with blockbuster movies that everyone has heard of. In this article, Matt Nestor and Ryan Gutowski will be taking a look at some of the hottest movies and throw out our thoughts on which ones have our hard earned dollars as we go into Summer 2012.

The Avengers [May 4, 2012]The AvengersRyan’s Take: May 4th seems like the official kick-off of the Summer Blockbusters with The Avengers. The movie has star power with Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson. Anyone who’s seen some of the great Marvel movies over the past 4 years will probably already be a fan. By bringing together all these characters, I think you’ll have a hard time not finding something to like with this movie. PREVIEW GRADE: A

Matt’s Take: Ryan is right. This movie has all the big names and superheroes you could possibly want in a summer blockbuster, and all in one movie. My only fear is that it ends up being a little bit watered down when screen time gets divvied up amongst such a strong list of great actors. That’s a minor concern though and I am just as excited for it as the movie studio big-wigs will be on opening weekend. PREVIEW GRADE: A

Battleship [May 18, 2012]BattleshipMatt’s Take: It’s the not-too-distant future and planet Earth is being threatened by a force of giant alien yo-yo’s that seek to tear through civilization on an around-the-world trip of destruction. Ok seriously now. This movie seems to be the usual summer blockbuster, explosions-everywhere film that features a monster cast (they had me at Liam Neeson) and a script that has little chance of being that great. It all seems pretty standard fare, but for some reason I am really looking forward to this one. It also helps that Peter Berg is directing. After 5 seasons of Friday Night Lights the man can do no wrong in my eyes. So I’ll be patient, let’s see them turn the premise of a childhood game into a decent movie. PREVIEW GRADE: B-

Ryan’s Take: I can’t say that I’m optimistic like Matt. I feel like Hollywood is saying “Remember being a kid? This will make you spend money cause we named it something you liked as a kid.” It’s super forced and I think I’d have more respect for the movie if they named it something else. I know Rihanna is sure to be a riveting actress in this movie, but I have no desire to drop $10-12 on this cash grab. PREVIEW GRADE: D

Men In Black 3 [May 25, 2012]Men in Black 3Ryan’s Take: I’ve gotta say that I was a big fan of MIB and MIB2. I think they’re funny and the characters are fun to watch. With Barry Sonnenfeld coming back to direct, it gives me hope that it will be done well even if I’m worried about the “time traveling” premise. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones might just make me a believer if they can make MIB3 funny with their quick wit and good acting. PREVIEW GRADE: B

Matt’s Take: It’s true, the Will Smith and Tommy Lee rapport may have to be what carries MIB3. And it will be. I think the pair has developed such a chemistry on screen that not even bad reviews will deter people from going out to theaters in droves on May 25th. The script may not end up being out of this world, but it will be worth it to see Willie from Philly working some of his one liner magic again. PREVIEW GRADE: A

Snow White and the Huntsman [June 1, 2012]Snow White and the HuntsmanMatt’s Take: This movie seems to be pandering to both the success of popular teen novels-turned-movies and the recent fairy tale TV show boom. I have to admit, I’m curious to see how they turn the classic tale into something edgier and appealing to a modern audience. My fear though is that even with marquee actors like Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron involved this movie will end up being something more along the lines of a Red Riding Hood(2011) or just another chance for lead actress Kristen Stewart to perfect her on-camera brooding. PREVIEW GRADE: C

Ryan’s Take: I am not a fan of Kristen Stewart and that would be enough to keep me from this movie by itself. The style of the movie really makes me consider seeing the movie but I’m not sure it’s enough. Visually I think this movie is going to be intense. It’s going to be really interesting to see how the story of Snow White will unfold in the movie. With the announcement recently that the “Huntsman” character will already get a spin-off, it seems like there is potential to see some solid movies spawn from this one. PREVIEW GRADE: B-

Personally I’m looking forward to either The Avengers or MIB 3. For Avengers, I loved all the Marvel films that came before (Thor, Hulk, Iron Man) and this looks promising.

As for MIB 3, like you said, Ryan, the first two are a laugh riot, and here’s hoping this one carries on that tradition.
