A Higher Calling – An Interview with Elias

A Higher Calling - An Interview with Elias
Elias is a local artist to the Columbus music scene that takes the craft of hip-hop as more than a hobby. In this interview, we sit down with Elias to talk about what inspires his music, where he finds his support and the importance of showing Christ in everything he does.

Every musician got their start somewhere. When did you feel that God had given you a gift to write and perform hip-hop?

I started writing worldly music at the age of 10 and performing around the age of 16. But I didn’t understand it was a God given talent until the Lord cause me to be born again to use it for His glory until 22 years of age.

With every hip-hop artist out there trying to make a name for themselves, how hard is it to stay humble working in the industry that you’re in?

Well first I will say, I am really not in the “industry” but to stay seeking humility as a Christian rap minister is a day to day battle with the flesh. The Holy Spirit is reminding me who I really am and convicting me of my sin. Two other resources by the grace of God is my wife/kids and my local church body at Berean Covenant. Seeing my desperate need for the gospel as God uses my wife as a mirror of how much I need His mercy & grace.

At the end of 2012 you came out with your album Narrow Minded. What was the heart behind putting this album together?

The heart behind Narrow Minded was a heart that wants to beat with the heart of God from what I was reading in the holy scriptures. So at the time, I was meeting so many false cults who’s doctrinal views of Christology was false. Their view of Salvation was that they believe a “works based” salvation.

So as I was studying the Word of God, I was seeing that Christ Jesus (The God Man) is the only WAY, Truth and the Life (John14:6, John10, Acts4:12) were Jesus is the only door to eternal life and that there is NO other name by which men can be saved. And not just the cults but a lot of Evangelicals compromising from the Essential Truth. That if we lose this we don’t have biblical Christianity but a false gospel (Gal 1:6-10) and so to stand for these exclusive truths is to be Narrow Minded.

When you sit down to write, what’s the thing that you want to express most through the music?

I want to communicate that Jesus Christ is the only ultimate treasure in this life and the life to come. (Psalm 73:25-25)

Off this latest project, what song do you feel the closest to personally?

I got a song called Ah Lord were I am really just venting out about my struggle with indwelling sin, the flesh and the world and how much I need the presence of the Lord.

At Collision, we’re always expressing the importance of community. How important is it that as people of faith we surround ourselves with a support system like the church?

Aw man what a beautiful question brother. I really believe one of the main means of God’s grace besides given us Himself is the local body. I think every believer needs to be connected to the body. To be submitted to Elders and to one another for the maturity and accountability to grow into the likeness and image of God.

Where can people check out your music and find out more about what you’re doing?

You can go to www.letscarryit.org, Amazon and iTunes. I really want to thank you Ryan and the whole Collision College Ministry for this humbling opportunity to have me share my heart and ministry with you guys and to the whosoever reads it (lol) Love you’ll dearly. Keep contending for the faith.

Colossians 2:8 – Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.
